In the latest Farnell catalogue, I noticed "radio modems" - these work at up 
to 4800 baud, and simply plug straight in and work, no messing around. So you 
could fairly easily run TCP/IP via SLIP, or NetBEUI/whatever via PPP, over 
these radio modems.
