It probably sounded normal to them, after losing their hearing at either end 
of the spectrum.
I'm reminded of a J.J. Cale concert I attended a number of years back. The 
fellow running the mixing board had the highs jacked up far enough that I had 
trouble hearing much other than the cymbals &c. Though it probably sounded 
just fine to him (a long-time member of the bar staff, probably with nicely 
damaged hearing), it made for a somewhat disappointing evening.
[snort] And people wonder why I wear earplugs to concerts/clubs...
