If it's any consolation, I have similar problems with Paul's Spirit, which
is one of the reasons I only poll TML once or twice weekly now.  I just got
fed up with every 3rd or 4th connect failing to negotiate properly.

BTW, USR have just announced a new V.34+ (33600bps) EPROM upgrade for V.34
Sportsters such as mine, and for only US$24.95.  Who needs a Courier now?
