I just go to my bank and tell them to transfer $xxx to 1234 account at xyz
branch. The money is usually in to the other persons account by 8am the
next morning.

I've done heaps of times. It is simply a transfer. It costs an extra 2
dollars or something. Did it recently for my daughter in Brisbane, when
they were a bit short. When she returns the money, she does it the same
way, and it appears in my account.
My wife also gets me to deposit into her accountin Brisbane, any cheques
for her that turn up down here

You only do a direct debit for regular payments to someome.
Like insurance or Housing loan or something.

Then you've got to post the bank cheque, and Australia Post has been known
to take a day or a week from here to Sydney. I dont completely trust them
for efficient delivery.

By me depositing to your account, you have the money sooner and it is
cheaper than a Bank cheque. It's just a transfer of numbers between the
two banks sometime during the night, when their computers talk to one
another.
I think Wespacs time is 3am to 4am. I used to know all the times for each bank.

Kind regards
