subject: Air conditioning

Hi Phil,

About "Air conditioning" of July 15:

PM> ...works faster and better if you use a window fan...
MS> I do more than that...
PM> Don't forget we often have hot nights as well.

Yes we do and when that happens i'm only "thermalizing" my place as
the neighbour downstairs. The lower the temperature differential is the
longer i need and should that difference be negative i close everything!

                                  8-o

MS> One could think that the building's insulation is really deficient.
PM> Any building will absorb quite a bit of heat during the day...

Yes! Heat accumulates in the material, not just under the ceiling.

                                  %-o

PM> ...shutting the windows and drawing the blinds to keep the sun out,
PM> usually keeps the place here cool until noon or later...
MS> ...vertical store behind the curtains... ...mother really didn't
MS> like it since this is no conventional way to dress windows...
PM> I've seen those recommended for exactly that purpose.

We didn't know! Well, lets say there's little new under the sun...

                                  8-)

MS> Films were also a concern, i was told those could make glass crack.
PM> News to me. Could be. But never heard that.

The person who told me so was a windows painter, i can't pretend it
is impossible this particular individual didn't serve her own agenda but
if i were to use films i'd try to apply them outside rather than inside,
anyway... With some sealant on the edges this could hold on, hopefully!

MS> ...i think the neighbour downstairs is contributing to my misery...
PM> What does he/she do, cook all day?
MS> He dries day and night!... Original...
PM> Talk to him.

The guy was supposed to leave at the end of June, he's still around
and quite lately i found out the logic also escapes even his friend - my
landlord... It strikes me when i see doors and windows opened no matter
how hot or rainy the day can be outside but not everyone is the same! I
am under the vague impression, after almost two years, that dialog isn't
a popular method for dealing with conflicts around here and that must be
why there's so much Christian programming on local TV: they compensate!

                                  %-b,

PM> Bring an aluminum baseball bat with you.

In other circumstances i just might like having a dog with powerful
jaws instead: the guy's cat could use a lesson or two and the dog would
keep me company until dawn on my balcony, while i'm venting the place!!!

PM> But how does he himself stand it? ...must be terrible...

I imagined that the convection/absorption happening above him could
suffice to make things bareable when he's home (he does leave often)? I
forgot to mention it but once i had winds in my kitchen that came from a
cabinet door which kept opening because of the pressure inside... I had
all of my windows and doors shut on that day, because of the winds! %-o

PM> And what if he stops what he's doing? The temperature outdoors is
PM> still high. 33C plus our humidity is HOT.

The guy will need to learn patience as it could take him a few days
before he can appreciate the benefits of still air and manage with it...

PM> The health department issues HEAT ALERTS... So you would still have
PM> to solve that... An air conditioner may be your only solution.

I'd deal with twenty-seven degrees Celcius hapily right now and not
complain, it's easy to see the necessity to address that problem one way
or another since i've already lost a computer monitor to it and i got no
choice but to renounce to a small colour TV set i had acquired recently:
it refused to work on my kitchen table (mother says it's fine on hers)!

I definitively need to act on this, i'm not getting younger... %-o

PM> I think my particular housing situation may be better than yours
PM> concerning cooling without an air conditioner because I'm in a very
PM> shaded area. But I still have to use one when it gets hot enough.

     I lived twelve years in Ahuntsic and heat was no insoluble problem;
on St-Laurent i just walked out to seek trees and on Vianney it couldn't
have bothered me less since i was heating the place in summer, actually!

I do miss Montreal a lot but i can't pretend i miss its smog too...

This old sector of Trois-Rivieres is practically desertic, compared
to Ahuntsic, i mean... There's hope for younger people who'll follow, i
read the electric, telephone and cable wiring will be removed gradually,
over the years; if they only stopped hurting trees _that_ might help...

                                                           Salutations,

                                                           Michel Samson

... Windows made your old AT look better, now it's the other way around!
