I just bought me a little muffin fan to sit next to the three modems I
run.  They do tend to get hot, and I've noticed that the speakers quit
working when they overheat.
I was told that the internal modem parts are actually mounted onto the
case in such a way as to use the case as a heat sink.  That would
explain a lot.
