Essentially he comments that a perfect storm came upon Byron.  He's a
social outsider who still manages to get the girl (while many of us
are outsiders who couldn't get the girl, and resented outsiders who
could even more than the insiders that did), he was a mirror of a
character we all liked and missed, and he got the girl at the expense
of a character we really liked.  Did I mention the girl?  (Mmmmmmm,
Lyta, ).

Things definitely mellow in retrospect, Byron doesn't seem quite the
prat after the nth viewing, and his death ends up being meaningful, if
somewhat maudlin.
