Hi Rod

RM> Apart from that, I get a funny connect maybe once in 20, the modem rejects

RM> it cos it's not ARQ, the comms prog redials, the next connect works.

More precisely, it used to connect with a bare 14400, no ARQ, no

nothing. Such a connect was invariably hopeless, junk chars just

poured out of the modem. So I altered the init string to reject

non-ARQ calls, to save the hassle.

BG> And that's EXACTLY the same symptom which the rest of us are seeing with

BG> Paul's Spirit, albeit considerably more frequently than you appear to.

RS> He's right, thats precisely the problem.

RM> It ain't just the Sportsters either, as

BG> it happened with 2 Dynalinks I "evaluated".

RM> Apart from the "you dummy" winfax situation outlined

RM> above, I've never had two failures in a row,

RS> I dont think I have either, might have once, forget.

RM> so I've put it down to an occasional bad line.

RS> Nope, its the Spirit problem. I just dont ever get that when calling

RS> other than a Spirit, so it cant be an occasional bad line.

I call only 3 bbs's on a regular basis, so I can't tell

RS> And a bad line shouldnt give that particular symptom anyway,

Good point - if the line was funny, why don't the modems negotiate

a lower speed instead of connecting at 14400 with no error checking?

 RS> you should get a

RS> proper V42bis connect with a higher than usual error rate which drops

RS> the thruput a bit. Not that that normally happens either for me tho.

RS> OTOH I am on a decent modern digital exchange.

(I may have mentioned this before, but never mind)

More often than not, I get an error prone connect when calling my

local bbs. He lives only a short distance away, but our phone#

prefixes are different - I'll have to find a telecom friend to work

out which exchanges we're using.

The modems connect correctly at 14400 every time, but Zmodem works

very poorly, dropping back to shorter and shorter packets every

time it strikes a glitch. I use Sealink with him now, it runs quite

smoothly. OTOH, I point off that system as well as call it in bbs

mode, and the point software doesn't seem to have much trouble.

Odd.

RM> Maybe you need to move north.

RS> Bob uses the same modem as you have, no problems at all.

? He has no trouble talking to Paul's Spirit?

Cheers
