Hold on...
My first modem was a 300 bps acoustic coupler made by Sendata, I bought it
in 1982, the sticker says it was Telecom approved and the instruction
manual says that using a non approved modem could result in a fine.. only
COULD, so i guess that Telecom werent too fussed about chasing people back
in 82.. However when I bought my 1200/75 Sendata modem in 85 it had a nifty
silver sticker on it stating it was Telecom approved, and that using non
approved modems on any of Telecoms phone lines was against the law and the
fine was confiscation and $2000.
From what i remember, it's always been slightly dangerous to use a non
approved modem on telecoms phone lines, now it's illegal under Austel, but
that doesnt stop people, I know several rather prominent Sysops using non
approved modems on their BBS lines..
warm fuzzies,
