Hello Thurston -

CA>>>> Hard as it is to believe there are people and countries
CA>>>> that have survived with no Latin-based derivatives. I
CA>>>> don't think the Japanese (for instance) would miss Latin
CA>>>> at all.

CA>>> Yeah, but how many USAians want to speak Japanese?

CA> > According to my grandchildren Japanese has replaced Latin
CA> > as>the

CA> 'recommended' elective when selecting a foreign language
CA> to>learn in high school.

TA> They would probably be better prepared for this century if
TA> they selected Spainish, if they expect to live in the USA.

I don't necessary expect my grandchildren to only live in the
USA. Prior to my marriage and subsequent family I was in the
process of arranging to live outside the USA and had no
timeline as to when I might return.

TA> (Remember in the last century when the optimists were
TA> teaching their children Russian, while the pestimists were
TA> teaching thier childrem Chinese ?-)

All parts or our world seem to move in different directions, or
so it seems having lived in Michigan my entire lifetime. Here,
in my youth language has been an elective only recommended to
those headed for college and Latin was #1, followed by Spanish
or French. The Latin is useful for the sciences with Spanish
being similar when written (still helpful) and French is handy
for early literature where entire pages may jump to French for
no particular reason other than ego (so I am told). I also
recall some older literature jumping to Latin but usually only
a few sentences.
