5.1+ DOS will work on a 286 (or an 8088) with quite acceptable
performance. I would not bother with 5.0 (5.1 fixed some bugs).
4.2 is fine, and may be the best version for speed (Word Perfect
used to be far and away the fastest word processor), but the
printer drivers have not been improved since about 1988 or 1990,
and won't support most inkjets. (And support for most laser
printers isn't very good: it's limited to 8 fonts per document,
unless you jump through real hoops; proportional spacing was
improved in 5.x; and each change of size is a font change (bold
is not, if you use the internal bold, rather than select the bold
font; italic is a different font).
4.2 was the last version that would work on a 1-floppy (5 1/4
inch DSDD) machine. 5.1 will work on a more recent 1-floppy (DSHD
or 3 1/2" DSDD) machine. This may be important if you have one of
the old Toshiba 1000 portables that some say were among the
greatest ever made.
