Now THAT would make an interesting clinical study.  Some do appear to
say things are too loud, but as to frequency response etc, interesting. 
I was DJing a private party a long time ago and unfortunatly my
home-made speakers have front controls for the tweeters and midrange. 
Later into the night the treble went sky high.  I compensated for that
at the source, but next morning noticed all  speaker controls at
maximum. :-)  No damage done, but sure must have been bright untill I
toned it back down. :-)
