May I suggest EditPad Lite? It's what I use here and my
daughter swears by it (really).  'Lite' = free version.

Nice of you to confirm that I'm not as crazy as people think I
am when I warn about using tapes for archival storage but there
are times when I really do wish I was wrong.

Failed backups is one of the times I wish I was wrong. ;-)
