I first saw monkfish advertised as "poor man's lobster" at, of all places,
a Red Lobster. After trying it I remarked to the wait-bot "You guys know
you're shooting yourselves in the foot, don't you?"
I've seen a lot of recipes for poor man's lobster over the years - mostly
either monkfish or cod. Once in a while pollock or mahi-mahi. I can't
recall halibut being mentioned in that scrum.

Title: Poor Mans Lobster
Categories: Seafood, Breads, Citrus
Yield: 2 servings
1 1/2 c Fry Krisp
1 c Tomato puree
1/2 ts White pepper
1/2 ts Garlic powder
1/2 ts Salt
1 lg Egg
3/4 lb Cod fish
Oil for frying
Melted butter for dipping
Lemon wedges
In a large bowl whisk together fry krisp, tomato puree,
white pepper, garlic powder, salt, and egg until well
blended.
Cut cod into about 2" X 2" pieces. Be sure that if you
use frozen fish that it is completely thawed.
Heat oil in fryer to 350§F/175§C (If you do not have a
fryer you can heat oil in a large saucepan)
Dip pieces of fish in the prepared batter shaking off
any excess. Gently place in fryer and cooking for about
4 minutes or until fish is cooked through. Do not over
cook or you will lose that "lobster" color. Remove
pieces of fish to a paper towel to drain.
Serve immediately with melted butter and lemon wedges.
