I am using a homemade colinear J-pole on 2 Meters.  According to the docs,
it has a gain of 6 dB over a dipole, and it does get close to 100 miles
reliably with my 5-watt HT.
 
The overall height is about 120 inches - 10 Ft., (just over 3 Meters),
high, not counting the mounting mast.  If you want the details I can
send them to you or post them.  Do you have netmail access?
