Outside of the Comune Di Salerno, in Ogliara, were the churches S. Maria and
S. Nicola. The two churches were combined into one parish in 1812, with the
closing of S. Nicola, but the name was retained.
It seems that the church of S. Maria and that of S. Nicola were built,
toward the end of the Tenth Century, from the accounts of Maio, Adelmo and
Madelmo, children of Guaiferio. The first information of the church of S.
Maria appears around 1003.
In 1309, the church of S. Maria was annexed to the royal chapels of S.
Petris to Curti de Salerno, and of this there is information in 1505. Around
a half century later, the church reports to be a parish in the year 1532.
The church of S. Nicola was also built by the children of Count Guaiferio,
and the first record is in 1105. In 1309, it was held by Costantino
Pappacarbone, and in 1338 it is named as the ecclesia S. Nicolai de Oliaria
juris patronatus. Records report the Church to be a parish already in 1474.
In 1812, during the kingdom of Gioacchino Murat, the church was closed and
attached to S. Maria with the title only of S. Maria and S. Nicola of
Ogliara.
The faade has suffered some remodeling to give her a Baroque aspect.
Introduced were four lesenes, symmetrical in comparison to the central axle,
then the portal of entry in stone surmounted by an oval, where it represents
a sacred image.
The bell tower, on the left, has square form and is characterized from the
division in three horizontal bands; in the intermediary band there is a
clock of octagonal form. The bell tower was completed with an octagonal drum
surmounted by a dome.
The inside, whose installation can go up again to the period
late-longobardo, was also remodeled, and is with only one aisle with side
chapels, three for each side, and at the end there is the apse of
semicircular form separated.
The roof, has been restored in the years ' 60 with a plain slab of
reinforced concrete that has replaced the original coverage with
barrel-vault and wooden roof.
