DM> GE>Ah, a modified version of a lyric from Jim Steinman's title song from
DM> GE>the album "Bad for Good" -- "I wasn't built for comfort, I was built
DM> GE>speed". The album is also home to some songs that sound like they are
DM> GE>Prog-Rock...
DM> MD> ...it's the title of an old blues written by Willie
DM> MD> Dixon originally for Howlin' Wolf, released by Chess records as a
DM> MD> single back when it was called "race music." I suppose Jim
teinman,
DM> MD> whoever the hell that is, lifted the line...
DM> Steinman was perhaps trying to distance himself from his collaborator
DM> Meat Loaf (or Mr. Loaf as he is sometimes known),
Actually, Steinman & Meat Loaf were a team, with a relationship
described by Steinman as similar to Pete Townsend & Roger Daltrey.
Steinman wrote 'em, Meat Loaf sang 'em. The album "Bad for Good" was
produced to satisfy a record contract for a follow-up Meat Loaf album.
Mr. Loaf had a severe injury to his vocal cords, so Steinman did the
singing on the album. He's not half bad, but not the heldon tenor that
Meat Loaf is.
The album has a wide range of musical styles and influences on it,
ranging from "it's got a good beat & ya can dance to it" stuff to some
outstanding prog-rock tracks. (I realize the purists out there will rant
and rave that no music that's included on the same recording as
non-prog-rock music could be REAL prog-rock. Get a life.)
Two tracks were included on a separate EP packaged with the LP (making
it an album & a half), one of which is a pure symphonic opus called
"After the Storm". Forget classical "influence", this was REAL classical
music.
And before the purists out there start with the "He ain't no prog-rock
artist, so nothing he makes is prog-rock" bullshit, listen to the album.
DM> Jim's more of a Todd Rundgren wannabe?
Actually, Steinman & Rundgren worked together very closely on many
projects. Rundgren did some production work on many Meat Loaf and Bonnie
Tyler projects. His duet with Bonnie Tyler on "Loving You's a Dirty Job"
from her Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fires album is excellent. It's not
real Prog-Rock, but it's very proggish.
Jim Steinman does look a little like Todd Rundgren, but then so does
Jackson Browne and Jay Hitt (He's a guy I went to school with. He's not
famous, but he DOES look like Todd Rundgren.)
