LJ> That's sort of what I was getting at. While some of the sounds used are
LJ> pure stock straight off the CDs, others use pieces of
LJ> sounds that have been
LJ> remixed. For example, to get the sound of Duke's gun hitting the floor
in
LJ> the cinematic at the end of level 2, I mixed 8 or 9 different CD sounds,
LJ> some with pitch shifting and/or EQ, down into a single effect.
Actually, I thought that sound was a bit weak, no offense. :-) The thing
is, it sounds like Duke's gun is too light, and isn't the maker-of-death
you'd think it'd be. It does make a great door sound though!
LJ> Fortunately, I don't need to go to the zoo for this - we have a good
LJ> collection of panthers here. ;-) However, I have had to do a small
amount
LJ> of custom foley.
You ought to do more personal sound collecting. I'm sure there's a lot of
potential sounds to grab out there. For example, if you're ever trying to
get the sound of a TIE Fighter, try listening to a passing school bus. At
least a few times, I've heard that distinct roaring sound.
LJ> I disagree - it's okay and rather appropriate, but not stunning. As for
LJ> Prey's music, it's much too early to divulge what we're
LJ> considering. All I
LJ> can say is that we've built up a rather decent music
LJ> production setup here,
LJ> including a Kurzweil K2500RS, which will make its presence known it
LJ> everything from Shadow Warrior onward.
I guess I'll have to concede a bit... my feelings on Quake's music are
pretty much yours. It's appropriate, and sometimes perfect, for the dark,
brooding horror that is Quake. But there's no real distincitve riffs that
stick in your mind.
Does the Kurzweil (I have one of their digital pianos, by the way) mean
that Shadow Warrior's music will be in MOD format, or something similar? Or
will it just mean better MIDI?
LJ> Eccchhhh. I have an AWE32 in my MIDI machine for compatibility testing
LJ> only. Frankly, I hate the thing, especially its MIDI
LJ> patch set. Give me a
LJ> Roland/Edirol SCD-15 or a Yamaha DB50XG daughtercard anyday.
Yeah, the rock 'n roll instruments on the AWE32 are pretty weak. The card
IS good for classical tunes though.
I haven't heard either of those two music cards (except for CD audio
recordings of game tracks, like 7th Guest and Hexen). Is it true that the
DB50XG can do Jimi Hendrix music well? And will Shadow Warrior have XG MIDI
music?
JF> hope the railgun (it IS in there, right?) is done well.
LJ> That's one I didn't do. Most of the weapon sounds were in before I got
LJ> hold of it, although I have done a few revamps.
Hmm... well, nice to see you're keeping things in line. But still... any
of the sound effects you've done strike you as being superb?
LJ> It has to do with the sound engine, which is the same thing we used for
LJ> Duke. It was written with VOCs in mind. Shadow Warrior was so far
long
LJ> when I came in that it was too late to change to
LJ> anything else. BTW, HMI's
LJ> SOS system still uses raw PCM data instead of WAVs or VOCs.
Thought that it might be the engine.
Pulse-code modulation... is there anything particularly special about that?
LJ> It isn't out, but like I said, some of Lo Wang's comments are posted in
LJ> Real Audio format on our web site.
When I can, I'll check 'em out.
LJ> Since I've received clearance here, his name is John Galt. If you've
seen
LJ> Forrest Gump or JFK, you've heard him: he did LBJ's voice in both
movies.
How about that! I just hope that he didn't overdo (or "underdo") Lo Wang's
accent.
JF> detail here. By the way, do you have an "I spent too much time
JF> underwater, I need air!" sound? That was particularly interesting in
JF> Quake, and I would love to see it in Shadow Warrior.
LJ> Can't get that specific in my comments at this time.
Why not?
LJ> Good question. Buy two copies of the CD - one for the computer, and one
LJ> for the boom box.
Suuure... :-) Maybe when it's $4.95 Canadian.
