Ok, here are the problems I had with the USR Courier in the
first few hours of operation:
1. I was unable to connect to Dave Hatch's Hayes V34. There
were some very weird sounds coming out of the modems. Replacing
the Hayes with another USR V34 fixed the problem.
2. Had trouble sending data TO a Supra modem. This turned out
to be a CTS problem on my end.
3. I decided to set the baud rate to 19200 in Binkley rather
than 38400, and what happened was the modem started sending
junk to Binkley rather than "RING". This could be because I
had not issued a "mode" command to the modem, I haven't tried
again yet.
4. The supra (I think) actually had a failed connect to the
modem. I tried various things including V32bis, so I don't
know what the situation there is, we'll see over the next
few weeks.
5. There is a retrain being issued after each connect to the
supra. Possibly not a problem.
6. Paul Markham tells me that the USR has a lot of line
dropouts and in fact he usually can't call his internet
service provider without it dropping out within an hour.
7. The link diagnostics reported by ATI6 always have
"characters received/sent etc etc all set to 0!".
Now for some questions:
1. The code in the flash rom of the USR is Australian code about
a year old. Is there later Australian code? Can I use American
code instead? Both official and unofficial stories. Actually,
semioffical stories too.
2. Does anyone have a Spirit Thunder that they can try dialling
me with? I want to see if the connect fails at V32ter because
of retrain problems (assuming retrains are disabled on the
Thunder).
And now for some information:
1. The storm has managed to fry the CTS line in my modem cable.
I have replaced the cable. The com port is unharmed.
2. The storm has damaged my modem, but not my modem power supply.
3. My USR has been set up as follows:
AT&F1
ATS56=0
AT&W
And from then on, ATZ.
And now for some amusement:
1. The only things my wife touched were the modem and the RS232
cable!
And now for something completely different:
BFN. Paul.
