  General Motors shut down.  They were one of the biggest
  employers in the area, plus all the feeder plants that
  only had one customer (GM).  I think that started some of
  it.
  The crazy thing is Oshawa is almost 2 cities.  You have the
  Central / south end which is filled of homeless, drugs, escorts
  etc etc.  Mostly white and black here, low education jobs, or
  on one of the many gubment cheques.  Then there is the north
  end which is called "Poshawa" where all the cookie cutter houses
  are. This would be mostly asian / east asian and white / black with
  university educated jobs or police, firefighter, construction high
  paid jobs. We live in the downtown area so fight off homeless when
  we walk to the corner store.

  Property values are still through the roof, even in the bad areas
  here.  Why?  It's a easy(ish) commute to Toronto.
