Hello Wayne -

--8<--cut

WC>> Great, looks like another machine is in order :-(

Keep in mind that 32x and up has the potential to explode an
unbalanaced CD.

I only know of the transfer speed differential for external USB
drives.

--8<--cut

CA>> Keep in mind it's shareware ($35).

WC> Yeah, no immediate use in mind. Will unzip using the -t
WC> option to see what's there and then selectively unzip the
WC> docs for reading.

The docs are difficult to understand. Took me awhile to figure
them out.

--8<--cut

CA>> I've never worried about any of that. I keep backups,
CA>> always have, and just don't stress myself about the clowns
CA>> who panic at every new virus or worm out there . Life is
CA>> much the same. You can imagine boogeymen in every shadow

WC> If it passes tampering with the piracy chip will have the

WC> computer issue with me.

The US gov already has laws on the books to allow them any
access they could ever want. With the 'Homeland Security' thing
recently any pretense of privacy went down the tubes.

--8<--cut

WC> I DID notice the condescending attitude from others. Got
WC> dissed in newsgroups asking a question, "Well why expect an
WC> answer when it's not Linux!"

Usenet can be extremely hostile, yes. For Slackware based
mini-installs I would recommend trying only the usenet groups
specifically setup for Slackware users.

--8<--cut

WC> There's a Verizon Linux newgroup but that's where I got
WC> dissed with the SMTP question for a small footprint Linux,

Wish I could recall what has changed. :-\

WC>> Well I DO wish I could recall the file that sets
WC>> environmental variables.

CA>> Why do you need to set an environment variable?

WC> I wanted to setup the Linux OLR you recommended and wanted

WC> how many files even a mini-Linux has!

I will take a look at my installs.

Good.

CA>>> If you have W31 on one machine and W9x or newer on the

WC>> I need to snag that cable. I've got both the other cables
WC>> but not a 9 pin - 9 pin serial cable.

CA>> The null serial isn't needed if you have laplink cables.
CA>> Even DOS can use laplink cables. :-)

WC> I don't even know what a laplink cable is.

A null parallel cable. You can find them almost everywhere but
prices will vary from X to 2X depending on where you find them.
Best to shop around. I wouldn't bother getting a null serial
cable as the null parallel is many times faster.

WC>> Amazing how many 16 bit apps from 3.1 I've copied to a

CA>> Yes seems most will work but I'd not use 16 bit WS-FTP. It
CA>> doesn't understand long filenames and that can be
CA>> troublesome when accessing servers that do and use LFNs.

WC> Good point and something I'd obviously missed. Given the
WC> users license I should just snag the 32 bit version.
WC> However since Simtel changed it's setup making it FTP
WC> unfriendly... Still there are the Linux mirrors.

The author of WS-FTP has a homepage.

WC> Still not used to long file names in Windows and the

Not really knowledgeable about W9x backups for the registry but
there are _two_ hidden files to find, not just one. fwiw: There
are seven files to locate for the W2K registry. LOL

CA>> Most people I've discussed tape drives with seem to feel

Sounds about right for Colorado Jumbos. :-)
