MS released a Scanprot.dot which contains macros that prevent 
infection with the Concept virus. Under certain conditions,
these macros can cause WinWord to crash. 
The instance that caused us grief was WinWord 7, opening
a merge document that is bound to an ASCII text file. Inter-
mittently WinWord would simply crash when opening these
documents. It took some time to realize scanprot was the culprit.
(A lesser problem with ScanProt is that it prevents you from
opening multiple files from the FileOpen dialog.)
