If you purchase a null serial cable you will eventually regret
it. 

The null parallel (often marketed as a laplink cable) will do
much faster transfers and can be used for both DOS and Windows.
Not so sure about Linux but I'd be very surprised to find Linux
had no use for a laplink connection. 

If all you want is a null serial cable there are adapters to
plug to the end of a standard serial cable, null adapters, that
take up less space than another cable and may be a bit less
expensive depending on where you are standing when you reach
for your wallet. :-)
