I use my modem and never had it get so hot as to not be able to touch it. I 
can only assume as you've mentioned you've got it running on a hot day and 
maybe near a window where it may recive direct sunlight. If that's the case 
move to a better location especially with some air circulation is present and 
if stuck on a shelf, move any objects for better air circulation. A small fan 
wouldn't hurt either, I use a clamp-on fan when my place gets rather hot.
