Yes.

All the problems are resolved now.  My later post mentioned that pdf files
from the real world had the same problem.  I finally found the culprit -
orientation was for some strange reason set to seascape.  Changing it to
auto and all is finally well.
 
When I said i "reinstalled" I meant I recopied all the files in the ghost
directory tree from a backup from before when I had installed eCS 1.1.  I
also found gvpm.ini (in the os2 directory) and restored an old version of
that.  I think for good measure I also reran the gs/gv installer.
