Children from wealthy families all over the world come to
Michigan Universities.

Sounds like quite a hardship.

To be honest I'm not sure anymore. People like the Enron execs
are college grads. Seems the college kids spend more energy
trying to lie, cheat, and steal than doing anything productive
with their 'education'. I went to college for awhile (dropped
out) and I remember between classes the majority of the
conversations were about how to cheat your way through. There
is the classroom education and there is the environment between
classes with a different sort of 'education'. 

Seeing poor families putting their daughters there in the hopes
of snagging an up-and-comning lawyer/doctor/accountant was
depressing and the young men know this too and take advantage
of it. Ever heard of "pig parties"? They exist, it's not a
Hollywood invention.

When was this? A large percentage of people in the US are
illiterate. Think Arkansas. I worked with a few illiterates who
had managed to work their way up to foreman and were unable to
read or write - they memorized everything. 

My generation, the 'Boomers', are the most educated group of
people who ever walked the face of this earth but we didn't all
go to college. Steve Wozniak (invented the APPLE computer),
Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates (to name a few) dropped out of
college. Their degrees are 'honorary'. 

fwiw: We are also the first generation of Americans who could
be blindfolded and dropped off in any country in the world and
eventually know where we were by visible landmarks (television).
