Almost certainly variable line conditions. Not uncommon, sadly.

PE> 2. Dave Hatch's Hayes V34 - no successful connect ever.

Weird. No problems with ANY other V.34s here, even NetComms. :)

PE> 3. Rod Speed's Supra - 50% of calls fail with retrain problems,

Ask Rod to disable retrains at his end, not yours.

PE> 4. Bill Grimsley's USR Sportster V34 - perfect connects so far.

Of course. I'd expect no less.

PE> 5. Paul Markham's Netcomm - connections at 26400, 24000, 2400!,
PE> 14400.

Lines again? Dunno, it's extremely unusual to say the least.

PE> 6. Frank Malcolm's Spirit Thunder - connections at 2400!

PE> 7. David Begley's Netcomm - all connections at 26400.

That's the initial connect. What about doing an ATI6 & ATI11
afterwards? I'd be very surprised if the modems hadn't shifted up to
28800. Might be worth adding an Aftercall statement to your binkley.cfg
(see mine below).

PE> 8. The USR Sportsters appear to be handling it fine at 14400.

No surprises there.

PE> 9. Jeff Green's Netcomm has actually seen a slight improvement.

No surprises there either. NetComms work fine with my USR.

PE> 10. I am a bit miffed at the fact that ATI6 doesn't give me

You have to do it IMMEDIATELY following the call. Any AT command will
clear the modem's buffer. Aftercall is very good for checking stats.

Shouldn't be, and this is from personal experience with the modems
(Couriers) on Mike Richardson's BBS. I suspect your init or setup may need
tweaking a little. Here is the relevant part of my own binkley.cfg (also,
try using the MODE command _exactly_ as I listed it in a previous
message)...
