Since it does have the 386 as the audio out, you might try changing
the capacitor that's connected to pins 1 and 8. With no cap installed
the gain is around 26dB, if you put a 15uF in it jumps to 46dB or so.
I think the max value you can use is either 100 or 1000uF.
You might just have a bad cap.
