Hello Roy -

CA>> As I have mentioned, I used to work very long hours. While
CA>> working over 3000 hours per year there were some several
CA>> weeks in a row that I would work 80-100 hours per week.
CA>> Naturally I drank an above average amount of coffee in
CA>> those years to remain conscious. I also smoked more, in
CA>> part due to the coffee, and both caffeine and nicotine
CA>> eventually harden the lens of the eye. Old(er) age doesn't
CA>> help much. :-\

RJT> Hm. I wasn't aware of that. (Looking at coffee cup with my
RJT> third in it, and cigarette sitting in the ashtray... :- )

RJT> I'm *still* trying to get used to my new glasses, too.

If your lens are hardening you have a lesser range of
adjustment than you had before. You will need bifocals or
trifocals for that and they s*ck. Almost fell down the stair
several times wearing bifocals. The near-vision is at the
bottom where you see the stairs and it throws off your depth
perception.

I also think there is a defeatist attitude out there for
doctors including ophthalmologists if you are old. If you are
old _and_ poor even more so.

After getting through physcial therapy to recover the use of my
left arm the orthopedic surgeon said I needed surgery on both
shoulders but he didn't recommend it because I was past the
point of _needing_ strong shoulders (according to him). I was
approximately 50 at the time. I didn't agree with his opinion
but he said the surgery was only successful 75% of the time and
could even make them worse. Recovery is painful, long, and
slow. About a year to get back to normal use. I declined the
surgery but still don't care for the attitude that a man at 50
has no need for strong shoulders. :-\

I get the same impression when having my eyes examined that
they are rushing through and not really listening to me. Maybe
I'm just paranoid?
