But he did. "Then what would you hope to get out of four, five or six
that you did not get out of one, two and three?"

Sometimes you're Mohandas Gandhi, sometimes you're Sabbatai Zevi.
Sometimes you're George Washington, sometimes you're Maximilien
Robespierre. The human race still needs men like Byron, and yet....

Near the end of Dorothy L. Sayers' chronicle play, "The Emperor
Constantine", St. Helena has the following exchange with her son:

HELENA: To forgive and to spare are not always the same.
You spared Maximian and Licinius once--did you forgive them?

CONSTANTINE: [surprised by a new idea] Why, no--I suppose
not. I didn't care for them enough. I wanted to be magnanimous....

There's something of Constantine in Byron. To quote another English
dramatist of that generation,

The last temptation is the greatest treason:
To do the right deed for the wrong reason.

People think that when Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart," He
was talking about not reading "Playboy"; He was not.

And so Byron began by doing the right deed for the wrong reason, and
ended by doing the wrong deed for the right reason.
