ML> I don't know why sugar has been so demonized. We do eat too
ML> much of it, but we eat too much of a lot of things, and the
ML> substitutes have proven to be not so great for most people.

By all reports Americans consume more added sugars than any other
country in the world, 10 times the WHO recommendations and also 10
times as much as they did a century ago.

Canada's consumption is about 2/3 that, still way too much.
Roslind is the only one I know who stays below the WHO guidelines.
We avoid artificial sweeteners here except for a brief trial with
Stevia which is technically not artifiical, and also minimise the
amount of HFCS that comes into the house.

ML> The many small meals theory seems to be the current popular
ML> one, and I'm doing more of that despite its being totally
 ML> alien to my lifestyle.

Roslind swears by the concept. It helps her control her blood sugar
without medication. I'm eating that way too for convenience sake.

ML> making cocktails out of it - vodka cranberry with lime

It's too bad that it's considered a feminine drink as it's quite
tasty but a straight guy can never drink one in public. I first had
one in 1979 at a Chinese and Western restaurant in Cold Lake,
Alberta called the China Moon and they called the drink the China
Moon Special. Lots of guys drank them including members of the
military and the roughnecks from the oil patch. It was after all a
riff on the masculine sounding Kamikaze.

... The beauty of cocktails is they transcend their assembled components.
