You're actually in a prime position to check the compatibility of modems;
why don't you try and get a few "demo" models from somewhere
(either vendor direct, or retailer) for testing purposes, then report all
the problems back to 'em?
Then you can actually *try* a NetComm, Banksia, whatever in addition to the
USR and Spirit, and make a decision based upon the reality of testing the
thing?
You might have to agree to write a review for a magazine for the caper to
work, though. Good luck..
