Seems to be the case. I used 130dB, because that was the level of clipping at
the sound console of the last large church system I designed, which is about
20 dB above the loudest that sound system would ever be run on an average,
giving sufficient headroom before clipping.
Can you imagine that 162dB car on the street during a cruise? You ought to
see (or is that hear) the game of oneupmanship that happens every weekend
here at Arden Fair Mall in Sacrament , if you don't think the owners of these
cars don't actually use all of that equipment.. The EQ curves are all "disco"
curve smiley faces.. lots of sizzle from the top, and lots of boom, and
nothing else. Usually at about 3-5% distortion trying to get above the car
next to them. This is "adult" and "mature" behaviour? They are only doing it
because they like "quality" sound. And the com etitons only encourage this to
happen, which encourages ever larger sales of equipment, and hardly ever does
this have to do with sound quality, or headroom, or any of the other things
that audiophiles, pros, and hobby stereophiles need or want.
That's why I have a hard time taking anything about auto sound seriously.
