Yet somehow you're bypassing that min and max if you are able to see a full screen width >80 characters?

Yes, agreed. Some kind of limit is necessary for *quoted* text, but I don't think it is necessary for unquoted text when that text usually gets reflowed when quoted anyways. ;)
