Yes, the 'Mrs' is quite agreeable and remarkably knowledgeable
re:software as well. When he is in mid rant he will pull her
access and not allow anyone to speak with her. ;-)

No problem. EditPad probably does too much but it was already
installed on this machine and it does work. I ignore all the
'options'.

Same way my tape drive died. I'm fairly certain there is a
simple antedote for this (demag the head maybe?) but I don't
trust tapes after all the troubles I've had.

CA>> Failed backups is one of the times I wish I was wrong. ;-)

I run a cleaner cartridge through mine frequently and do scrub
the pinch rollers etc. with a cotton swab (and watch for bits
of cotton getting left behind). When my kids were with me and
watching tapes most of the day (literally) I kept the cover off
the VCR and probably cleaned it every night (or close). I hated
TV so much I didn't complain if they wanted to watch my
recorded programs (PBS Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Dr. Who,
Rumpole of the Bailey, and a few US movies). "Noises Off" was
one they watched a few 100 times. One of Carol Burnetts last
comedies. "Noises Off" could be used for a college class to study
comedy on stage. :-)
