  I do know a few... for example, sometime in 1994 (I believe) Ken Silverman 
was showing off this crazy new Build engine.  Then someone at Apogee (or 3D 
Realms, if it existed then) decided "hey, we could make a game like Doom 
now... only better!"  You guys then spent the next two years working on what 
we now know as Duke 3D.  
  I know that ROTT was no Doom-killer; a Wolf-killer, maybe.  But the point 
is,Duke 3D probably wouldn't have existed without Doom.  Just loot at that 
little secret area behind the altar of E1M3; all the proof you need.  :-)
