subject: USR Courier

I rang up the Modem Superstore/Modemware yesterday, and they
had 1 Courier in stock, but it was for retail sale only. The
new stock would be in in a months time, and they didn't have
the pricing details on them yet.

I rang up "The Internet Shop" which is in Crows Nest, to see
whether they had one, and they didn't, but would check to see
if they could do sysop deals, normally they just refer sysops
to the importer.

So, it looks like it will be either a quick Yum Cha or a slow
USR Courier, obtaining-wise. I would like to take this
opportunity to do some rigorous testing.

So what am I sitting on at the moment?

1. Dave Hatch's USR Courier - perfect save one (only) connection
at 26400 instead of 28800.

2. Dave Hatch's Hayes V34 - no successful connect ever.

3. Rod Speed's Supra - 50% of calls fail with retrain problems,
despite the fact that the connection is only at V32bis.

4. Bill Grimsley's USR Sportster V34 - perfect connects so far.

5. Paul Markham's Netcomm - connections at 26400, 24000, 2400!,
14400.

6. Frank Malcolm's Spirit Thunder - connections at 2400!

7. David Begley's Netcomm - all connections at 26400.

8. The USR Sportsters appear to be handling it fine at 14400.

9. Jeff Green's Netcomm has actually seen a slight improvement.

10. I am a bit miffed at the fact that ATI6 doesn't give me
any number more exciting than 0.

In short, as a BBS operator I want a modem that can connect to
a wide variety of common modems, including all of the above.
The USR Courier is falling way short of that. I am keen to find
out about retrains on Frank's modem when he finally manages to
connect at 19200, before I install a new flash-rom which I will
be obtaining from Dave Hatch in the next couple of days.

Crikey, ATI7 on an Australian ROM doesn't even give a decent
Australian format date!

BFN. Paul.
