1237c9811d7e tech Hello Wayne - --8<--cut WC> I'll get back to Linux one of these days too but first WC> before using FIPS version 2 32 bit I want to dupe the drive WC> on the the Win 98 box then split the partition. I'd like to WC> know more about USB CD-ROM recorders and if they support WC> the older USB protocols that the H.P. undoubtably uses. WC> Need to research this. Based on what I've read USB v1.1 is very slow when using an external hard drive or CD burner. USB v2.0 is some multiples faster but I've only witnessed it used with an external CD burner. That is so very fast it's almost hard to believe. HP has the v1.1 USB from the factory. WC> Gotta check out Simtel today as I could not get on WC> yesterday to retrieve BootitNG which Charles recomended. Email headed your way. --8<--cut WC> You have seemed to have more than your share of video WC> problems per recent posts. Fortunately I fried the video on WC> the lesser of the P.B. motherboards forcing me to fix the WC> far superior board, dual primary drive channels, far better WC> onboard video and 16550 UARTS :-) Didn't someone or several people mention that monitors sitting in storage unused will wind up with bad capacitors or something to that effect? RJT>> Just picked up another book today about billyboy and his RJT>> ambitions... WC> I thought that was clear? Isn't he just out to monopolize WC> the computer software industry? Many people have invested in Microsoft. Many pensions are invested in Microsoft. Bill Gates is doing what he is paid to do - promote Microsoft and increase the value of it's stock. He is a businessman, not a hobbyist or zealot. Here in the 'TECH' echo, if we all wanted to get serious about this hobby we would have to admit we are all using the most inferior hardware platform available. Intel is cr*p and we all know that (I think?). At times I feel sorry for Microsoft having to write software for the worst possible hardware money can buy. WC> I want to finish the 486 box and get it to where I can WC> access it easily so I can play more with Linux. With the return of Maurice Kinal to the Linux echo you have a good shot at 'playing with Linux'. Maurice is one who hasn't been condescending to those who want to get an older (smaller) version of Linux up and useable. Maurice is also quite knowledgeable with hands-on experience the others pretend to have when all they've done is install 'distros' and have no actual personal experience with smaller installs. WC> Snag an old small, say 6 - 8 Gig hard drive perhaps WC> complete with an old box from an upgrade shop and dual boot WC> Win 3.1 - Linux? A Pentium 200 0r 200 MMX would be nice as WC> I have a box that'll run that with a non-smoked CPU as WC> backup. 200mhz is where things begin to get interesting and response is much snappier. It's a good place to start. My 66mhz Linux is good as text-only and intolerable when trying to use any type of Linux GUI. It's OK for W31 use though. :-) WC> I would like add a second physical drive to the H.P. but WC> that wimpy power supply that comes with the box scares me WC> for permanently adding a second physical drive :-( I don't think the newer IDE drives suck as much wattage as the older MFM, RLL, ESDI drives did. Two drives seems doable on most machines with power supply failures being no more frequent that before with one MFM drive. :-) WC>> When Charles Angelich mentioned the cable though it had WC>> already been on my mind as a no-cost next place to go I WC>> had little confidence in my idea until Charles also WC>> mentioned it spurring me to swap the cable out. RJT>> Sometimes it works that way. See? LOL WC> Yeah, I'd basically given up on it guessing a lightning WC> strike had done something to the motherboard. Swapping WC> ribbon cables is easy and with Charles suggestion I decided WC> what the hell let's give it one last try. Surprised me when WC> it worked it was so simple. WC>> do something with that lousy Rockwell HCG software modem, WC>> a 50 caliber Desert Eagle springs to mind ;-) RJT> > :-) WC>> Neither drivers.com nor H.P. support has a software WC>> solution to bring the modem into V.92 compliance from it's WC>> current KFLEX V. 90 standard. All the reports I see are WC>> work arounds that limit the modem to 33600 with a firmware WC>> upgrade required to bring it into compliance :-( I've WC>> found an acceptable external hardware data -fax for 50 WC>> bucks but I'd like voice as well. You haven't mentioned what you want 'voice' for? Using a computer as an answering machine seems overkill and eats hard drive space rapidly IMO. RJT>> I have one modem here with a couple of audio jacks on the RJT>> back of it that's supposed to be voice-capable. But I RJT>> didn't get the software that was supposed to come with RJT>> it, and have no idea where I might find some info on RJT>> doing anything with it under linux. WC> Did you run dmesg to ID the modem? On the net you can check WC> out the FCC number, right off the modem, which leads to WC> manufacterer then go to the manufacturers suppport site for WC> all sorts of information, drivers, ect. I've never found any of the 'special' voice or other software that is normally given with the purchase of a modem available anywhere for downloading and I've checked. --8<--cut WC> Latest software reinstall after a goof allowed me to WC> successfully use the power saver features to put the WC> machine in sleep mode without locking it up. Now to e-mail WC> myself my URL's, e-mail addresses and SuperVoice upgrade WC> from the 486 across the room :-) If you have W31 on one machine and W9x or newer on the other machine you can use a laplink null parallel cable with "Total Commander" to transfer files quite rapidly via FTP between the machines. It's what I use here on my machines. :-) > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
