Hello Ian.

IB> Hi all, I recently got my Dwell corrected at the school's auto shop
IB> and supposedly had it set to 30 degrees.
Perfect
IB> I checked the timing, (Disconnectes dist.vac. line) it was perfect.
Perfect. BTDC ??
IB> Plugged the vac. line back in and immediately the timing mark jumped,
IB> i don;t know how many degrees but about an inch or more advanced. (The
IB> engine would barely run w/o the dist. vac. line plugged in)
IB> Then i had someone rev the engine and the mark never moved from that
IB> spot. The pedal was to the floor for a brief moment, but still the
IB> timing mark never moved.
Have seen that...
IB> I figure either the vac. advance is pulling ALL the time, or the
IB> springs in the distributor are too weak and letting the mech.
IB> advance go all the time. help!
I've seen that years ago. One of my friends complained of funny
running engine: He had to push the accelerator quite far, before
the engine had any power to move his small-standard-normal pannel truck.
And even if the pedal was 3/4 to 7/8 down, almost at the floor,
the engine had no power. BUT! his automatic transmision was shifting
the same way as if he was drag racing. We know that's because of
the trans. linking between the carb and trans.
Wellll his trouble was: Error in vacuum line connections.
He had the line coming from the venturi connected to the
choke unloader, and the line coming from the manifold connected to
the spark advance bellow, on the distributor !!!!!
Can you imagine !! At idle: Full advance, and at near full
throttle... NO advance.
And the choke unloader did not make a big difference, when engine
hot, we know that. The choke is open anyway !
So CHECK THE ORIGINE of your vacuum lines !!!!!!
It is easy to miss our error !!!
Venturi spark advance,
manifold choke unloader or whatever else IS GOOD !!
IB> thanks.
Hope it helpde...
