Here's the PADI swim test for Divemaster: 
1. 400 yards freestyle in 8 minutes or less
2. 800 yards with fins, mask, & snorkle in 12 minutes or less
3. 100 yards unconcious diver tow in 3 minutes or less, with
   full scuba gear.
4. 15 minute survival float, the last five minutes with your
   hands out of the water half way to the elbow.
If you can swim this well, you are plenty good enough for
recreational diving.
