Bob, at 02:11 on May 25 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley...

BG> The violence of 40 years ago is nothing like the violence of today.

BL> Every heard of a razor gang? They call them skinheads now.

Yeah, but the difference is that the current breed of anti-socials turds
don't discriminate at all when selecting victims. Old ladies, cripples,
you name it, they're all fair game now. Evil little cunts, they are...

BL> I think the difference is space and isolation. 20-40 years ago
BL> Newtown was at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.

That's sure changed. My brother not long ago sold his restored terrace in
Wilson Street, for around $450k. I'd be lucky to get $80k for my 3 bedroom
home on a ¬ acre block right now (should have pissed off 5 years ago, when
it was worth $100k or so). Talk about negative gearing!

BL> I'd guess quite a bit lower than Logan - do you have derros?

Yep, but they're a bit younger. The media calls them street-kids, but I
prefer to call them feral, thieving, vicious little cunts.

BL> We did. But the people of Newtown are crammed in closer and were more
BL> supportive. If the guy next door bashed his wife (and he did every
BL> Saturday), then someon stopped him killing her. When I moved to Concord the
BL> thing that struck me most was the separation between people; the lack of
BL> density. It seemed empty! It is.

Too much violence, and people no longer want to get involved.

BL> A place like Campbelltown (or Logan, I guess) is as spread out as
BL> Concord but with the same problems of old Newtown. If I had fired a
BL> gun or smashed a window in Newtown (and I did) 20 people would have
BL> seen me do it and known me. In Campbelltown I can get away with it
BL> because no one sees or if they do, they don't know me.

Or simply don't care. That's the attitude I can feel around here.

BG> You really needn't have bothered. Honestly. :)

BL> Us perfectionists find our pleasure internally.

You stole that line from Greig Sheridan, didn't you? :)

Regards, Bill
