| subject: | Number of Roots ??? |
On 21 Oct 96 20:02:46 Frank Malcolm typed to Roy Mcneill about Cheep ewe Hi Frank > RM> I think there's actually a nontrivial limit to the number of files > RM> that can be stored in the root dir. Dunno if it ever got fixed, or > RM> if it's hardwired into FAT. > Yeah, 112. It was a joke, Joyce. :-) On the 5.25" 180k & 160k it was originally 64 This was increased to 112 on the 5.25" 320k & 360k discs and also on the 3.5" 320k, 360k 640k & 720k discs The 5.25" 1.2 meg and 3.5" 1.44meg the number was increased to 224. I haven't checked a lot of Hard Drives but the number can be 512 and would I suspect, vary with the number of sectors per cluster or some other criteria.
