subject: BC-200 XLT `AUDIO MODS`

Recently someone sent me a message telling me how to make an "audio
mod" to my BC-200 XLT. It's simply grounding the outside connector of
the headphone plug to the outside connector of the antenna. It works
great and makes the sound twice as loud when an external speaker is
used.
My questions are: does anyone know what and why it does this? And,
more importantly, does it have the potential to harm the scanner?
