The message from Scott Rhodes rises higher:
TR> Only for jukeboxes. BTW, I've never understood why foreign 45s have
TR> those big holes. Any idea?
SR>
SR> It goes back to the invention of LPs and 45s. Columbia invented the
SR> LP which ran at 33 1/3 RPM, and RCA invented the 45 around the same
SR> time. The 45 had the advantage of higher fidelity, but the LP was of
SR> course longer. In he early years, LPs were mainly marketed towards
SR> classical music lovers (imagine listening to Beethoven's 9th on 78 RPM
SR> records which, like 45s, only allow roughly five minutes to a side),
SR> and 45s were marketed towards pop music. The reason for the larger
SR> hole in the 45 was simply a move by RCA to make the two types of
SR> records even more compatible.
I don't understand. How do different hole sizes make records more
compatible?
SR> Why America kept the large hole while other countries apparently
SR> didn't, I don't know. Probably inertia more than anything else.
Americans don't like change.
