subject: no memory for 4dos under win95

Hi Vic,
(Monday April 13 1998 13:54) Vic Bates to Ted Menks about: no memory for 4dos
under win95
VB> Yes vmm32 grabs whatever it can, although I believe it can be setup
 VB> otherwise.
Exactly. Everyone seems to agree on that perception. :-)
TM>> But if I may believe what I've been reading here, you should be able
 TM>> to configure Win95 to allow use of UMB's in a dos-BOX.
VB> Yes, but how is it done??
See my other message to you... ;-)
VB> I have a shortcut to 4dos.com on my desktop. In the properties >
VB> memory there's a setting "Uses HMA" which can be checked or
 VB> unchecked.
That's something completely different indeed... forget that one.
VB> This is the only thing I can find which seems to tell win95 that the
VB> app uses this type of memory. I assumed this was what allowed it to
 VB> access UMBs.
You *do* know that HMA is something completely different from UMB, don't you?
Then why assume such a nonsensical thing? ;-))))
VB> I've used the [secondary] directive (as mentioned by Bill Drake) in
VB> 4dos.ini to get around this problem. But as you say, I thought win95
VB> could be setup to allow the use of UMB's to certain apps, etc.
That's a workaround to the error-msg indeed, but it doesn't help you to use
UMB, alas. If Klaus' method doesn't work, you should stick with Bill's plan
to stop 4Dos from trying to get UMB's ;-)))
