 That system was popular with the Motorola Car Radios. Been a very7 long
 time since I worked in the Radio Shop(1948/50) I don't recal which
 outher used the same. But there were some still using the Varable
 tuning capacitor and fixed inductance.
But at you pass into the VHF range both become somewhat small.
