 I will leave the first part of your question alone. 
To have Telemate download into particular directories (DOS version) 
then go to  Options, Directory, Download and specify similarly to:- 
  c:\telemate\recd;\pix\new\(*.gif);\mail\new\(*.qwk) 
then  Save options 
 
this puts telemate\recd as the default receiving directory 
all gif files wil go to \pix\new\ 
and all  qwk will go to  \mail\new\ 
 
Normally though you would use an Offline Mail Reader to collect your 
mail???  Hope this helps.
