Gary if your thinking of getting your bike overhaulled for the summer
season, you should get check the bottom bracket, head set and hubs. theses
should be cleaned and greased. Since your having them taken apart have the
bearing replaced. they do not cost much. check to see that your brake pads
are not worn and in need of replacement as also brake and gear cables.
Everything else can be done on your own with oil. Brakes, derailleur, brake
handle all need a little oil. Chain as the school goes should be replaced
every year. But there are many schools. Some say chains can last years. The
best would be to take a look at the chain to see for wear and tear. Take a
ruler and align a pin at 0 and another pin should fall exactly on the 12
inches mark. If further it means the chain has stretched replace it. If all
looks well remove the chain with a chain tool and clean and oil it. There are
devices on the market to clean chains without having to remove them. It is
always good to have the bike overhauled by a professional. The best time
though is before summer since this is the time the shops are busy with new
bikes as well as repairs. It is possible due to their rush they can do only a
so-so job. Early spring late winter is the best time.
