BG> Likely so, but I was curious to see what would BG> happen if you disabled retrains at your end. RS> I'm not convinced I can in the sense of refusing retrains the USR demands. BG> I thought that %E0 was common to ALL Rockwells. It is. The MEANING of it tho is a different matter entirely. BG> Tried it yet? Yep, made no difference. A you would expect from the docs. RS> The Supra docs seem to be pretty unambiguously stating that you can RS> only control the Supras monitoring of the line quality and using that RS> to initiate either a retraining or a rate renegotiation, fallback/forward. BG> In which case, I'd be awfully surprised if %E0 didn't turn it off. You are specifying whether the Supra monitors the line quality and does anything about retraining or rate negotiation, NOT whether it refuses that when the OTHER modem demands one. BG> Does the call continue at 14k4, or does the Courier drop DTR? RS> On the good calls, the call continues at 14400 and never ever RS> changes speed from 14400. On the dud calls, its STILL at 14400 RS> after the retrain, but with continuous receive and transmit error RS> retrys between the modems at the LAPM level, and eventually my RS> mailer gives up because it cant get the session handshake at the RS> mailer level thru that. On one occasions only it did eventually RS> success, taking heaps longer to mailer handshake than usual. BG> Urk! Urk indeed, not only is it completely silly for the USR to be demanding a retrain straight after the modems have already done that stuff to get a CONNECT, it fails to do it properly 30% of the time too. Totally fucked. BG> At this stage, I'd be HIGHLY inclined to call a few other Couriers (say BG> Poe, Dave D and Dave H) and see if the problem exists with those calls. Sure, its the logical test and that shows conclusively that the USR is being completely brain dead demanding a retrain like that. BG> Given that I've never heard anybody else complain about your problem, Most cant see the retrain being indicated on the front of the modem so clearly, and clearly the Viper calls are even more fucked. BG> I wouldn't be too surprised if they worked just fine. Heard it all before Bill, claims that everyone else is perfect. BG> It's not very scientific using just one modem BG> as a basis for a global complaint, is it? :) Pity no one was trying to Bill. Not very scientific to just finger point at say Pauls line either. BG> Given my own long-term results, and bearing in mind BG> that everywhere else I call is at 28800 straight up, BG> I suspect that there could be a line problem at PE's end. RS> Clutching as straws Bill, particularly with RS> a 2400 connect. Dont believe it. 14400 either. BG> Then why has nobody else complained? That remains to be seen doesnt it ? PRECISELY the same thing was said with the Spirit problem, all the Spirit devotees claimed that no one had ever seen anything like that, the Spirit was perfect. The truth was just a tad different to that story. BG> Given the number of Couriers in use on BBSs these BG> days, I'd have expected to see the odd similar complaint BG> pop up from time to time, but I haven't. Not once. Yeah, yeah, thats what they ALWAYS say, and what Digicom said too. I've heard these tall storys so often in the time I have been in computing that the come as no surprise. Doesnt mean they are true tho. BG> Dunno if you read the USR_MODEMS echo, but I know you read AUST_MODEMS, BG> and nobody else has EVER reported similar problems with the Courier. RS> I've seen that over and over again, one modem looks like gods gift to RS> modems, it turn out not to be. And Poe has had some significant problems. BG> LINE problems, Rod. Poe has even said so himself. We dont know that the USR VE is immaculate Bill. In fact we KNOW its not. We KNOW there are some questions with the transmit level atleast with the Aust version too. BG> Maybe Paul's place is jinxed... RS> Or maybe the sun doesnt actually shine out of the USR VE's arse |-) BG> Sorry, but I've seen too many of them in use to think otherwise now. Yep, zealots do usually respond like that. Doesnt make it true tho does it ? --- PQWK202* Origin: afswlw rjfilepwq (3:711/934.2) SEEN-BY: 711/934 |
