subject: an old bug revisited

Well, remember a long time ago that I was complaining about
the Spirit not recognizing that carrier had been dropped, and
spewing data to my computer at 38400 bps? Well, that problem
may or may not exist, I can't remember the exact circumstances.

However, for whatever reason, I did put a 4-minute limit for
signing on to my system, so that when the modem got into a
know, Maximus would hang up after 4 minutes. Really, I shouldn't
need that time delay.

However, guess what I saw today? First of all, someone is having
dire trouble connecting to my stupid modem. But the end result
is that it falls down to the BBS, and then I saw realms and
realms of "Invalid phone number, try again" messages, with the
USR having HS, TR, MR and CS all ON, and RD + SD flashing. The
message was going to the modem, some response was being
received, then the message was sent again.

I was keen to look at the lights, to see if the USR was just
as fucked as the Spirit, but the CD light was off, so the
chances are that the USR has done its job.

Which makes it a Maximus bug. Fortunately I can live with the
4 minute cutoff, so I don't have to pit my wits against a
Maximus upgrade. BFN. Paul.
